On June 18, 2025, Hampton University alumni, community leaders, and supporters came together at the Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia for a special screening of the inspirational documentary, “The Remarkable Story of James Apostle Fields.” This moving film, part of the “First Class” anthology series celebrating Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), showcases the extraordinary life and legacy of James Apostle Fields, one of Hampton University’s earliest graduates.

Born into slavery, James Apostle Fields rose to remarkable heights, defying adversity to become a prominent lawyer, educator, and Virginia legislator. His inspiring narrative, as depicted in the documentary, emphasizes the transformative power of education and perseverance. The event attracted a significant audience who gathered not just to remember a pivotal part of history, but also to draw inspiration for present and future generations.

Introduced by acclaimed actress and filmmaker Morgan Avery McCoy Harris alongside Dr. Danielle Wingfield, Esq., the screening provided profound historical context and emotional depth. Hampton University’s 14th president, Darrell K. Williams, joined descendants of James Apostle Fields and General Samuel Armstrong in narrating compelling insights, underscoring Fields’ influence and the rich heritage of Hampton University.

Complementing the evening’s historical tribute was a powerful short film titled “First Class: The Decision,” brilliantly linking the past and present. The short film explores the parallel experiences of Trey Anderson, a modern Hampton freshman quarterback portrayed by Mustafa Speaks of the CW’s All American, and historical figure James Apostle Fields, played by Jemarcus Kilgore of Hulu’s BMF. By juxtaposing life’s challenges centuries apart yet surprisingly similar, “First Class: The Decision” poignantly emphasizes enduring struggles and triumphs related to identity, resilience, and educational advancement.

Following the screenings, audience members engaged in an insightful question-and-answer session moderated by Harris and Wingfield, exchanging reflections on the enduring impact of education and civil rights advocacy. Many in attendance expressed renewed pride in Hampton’s mission and historic legacy, highlighting the importance of continued community and alumni support.

As proud alumni and members of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc., attendees were inspired to further the spirit of James Apostle Fields by supporting current Hampton University students. Alumni and supporters are encouraged to contribute generously to the NHAA’s Student Emergency Fund, ensuring students overcome unforeseen hardships to pursue academic excellence.
