Sunday, August 17, 2025, marks a fresh era in college athletics history as Hampton University’s women’s soccer team takes the field against longtime rival Howard University in the first-ever HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational. Scheduled for kickoff at 3:00 p.m. at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., this landmark event positions Hampton and Howard at one of America’s premier soccer stadiums—home of Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, the National Women’s Soccer League’s Washington Spirit, and DC Power FC of the USL Super League.

Renowned for academic rigor and a proud athletic tradition, Hampton University continues to assert its leadership through participation in events that spotlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Anthony D. Henderson Sr., Hampton’s Athletic Director, expressed the significance of this moment: “This is a historic moment for Hampton University women’s soccer and our entire athletics program. Playing at Audi Field not only showcases the growth and potential of our student-athletes but also reflects our commitment to providing them with elite experiences.”

The significance of this matchup extends beyond rivalry and competition—it symbolizes the advancement and broader recognition of HBCUs in collegiate athletics, particularly women’s sports. Following a promising season where Hampton garnered a well-earned draw against reigning Northeast Conference champion Howard University, Head Coach Scot Vorwold emphasized the powerful symbolism of the upcoming invitational. “Playing at Audi Field will truly be an unforgettable experience for both teams and a powerful step forward for HBCU women’s soccer,” he noted.

The stakes are also elevated by DC Power FC’s commitment to creating pathways for outstanding players in women’s soccer. DC Power FC will reward the winning team with an exclusive training session in Spring 2026 and offer a trial opportunity for an upperclassman athlete during the 2025–2026 season. Jordan Stuart, President of DC Power FC, emphasized this strategic partnership: “We’re working closely with the HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational participants to develop connections between collegiate talent and professional opportunities.”
