Hampton University’s Marching Force is headed to the 2028 Rose Parade. In a meeting on Tuesday, October 27, University administration approved the band’s proposal to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, one of the most-watched parades in the world.
The University has also committed to a fundraising campaign that will raise $1.45 million of the trip’s $2.2 million goal. The remaining $750,000 is the members’ share: about $2,600 per student, paid or raised. Details on the payment and fundraising schedule will follow.
Three milestones, three deadlines
The commitment comes with three funding milestones. The dates are tentative until University administration confirms them.
- Uniforms funded by March 4, 2027
- Instruments funded by May 11, 2027
- The chartered flight funded by August 1, 2027
If a milestone is missed, that item comes off the list, and the money raised for it moves to the goals that remain. Every date matters.
How Hamptonians can help
This is where the NHAA, the Band Parents Fundraising Committee, and every family and alumni network come in. Dr. Thomas L. Jones, Jr., Director of University Bands, is asking alumni to open doors as well as give:
- Employers and matching-gift programs: ask whether your company will match your gift.
- Foundations and churches: introduce the band to groups that support students and the arts.
- Alumni chapters: plan a chapter gift or fundraiser before the March 4 uniform deadline.
Give today
- Online: home.hamptonu.edu/donate. Write ROSE PARADE in the Comments box so your gift goes to the band’s trip.
- By check: payable to The Marching Force, memo ROSE PARADE, mailed to PO Box 6161, Hampton, VA 23668.
More details will follow as the University shares guidance. Until then, thank you for standing with these students.
