On Sunday, May 16, 2025, during Hampton University’s commencement ceremony, Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott delivered more than just words of encouragement; he delivered a profound commitment to the future of Hampton’s students. In a deeply meaningful and inspiring gesture, Speaker Scott unveiled the establishment of the Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott Endowed Scholarship, a generous endowment of $100,000 created in honor of his wife, Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott.
Dr. Mellanda Colson Scott, a distinguished Hampton alumna from the Class of 1993, graduated with a degree in chemistry and went on to achieve notable success in dentistry. She has long exemplified Hampton University’s tradition of excellence and dedication to nurturing leaders in healthcare. Reflecting on her experience, Dr. Colson Scott stated, “Hampton University didn’t just prepare me for a career—it shaped who I am. I love this Home by the Sea, and the education and experiences I gained here were the foundation of my success. It’s truly a privilege to now help support the next generation of students, leaders, and dentists.”
This endowed scholarship is specifically tailored to assist Hampton University students who are majoring in chemistry with aspirations to pursue dentistry—effectively paving the way for future leaders in healthcare professions. To Speaker Scott, this scholarship represents the profound impact Hampton University has had on their family’s life. “This scholarship is a reflection of everything Mellanda represents,” said Speaker Don Scott. “Her love for Hampton University and her deep commitment to giving back have inspired me and many others. Hampton University provided Mellanda the strong foundation to become the incredible dentist, mentor, and role model she is today. This scholarship is a proud means to give back to the place that has given us so much.”
Hampton University’s president, Darrell K. Williams, praised Speaker Scott’s impactful gesture of alumni generosity, noting how deeply the scholarship aligns with the university’s mission of service and leadership. “Don Scott’s contribution demonstrates the extraordinary legacy created by our alumni,” President Williams remarked. “His gift not only uplifts our students financially but serves as an inspirational example of Hampton pride and commitment to future generations.”
This important endowed scholarship will significantly relieve the financial burdens many students face, allowing them to focus fully on their educational pursuits. Hampton alumni and supporters are encouraged to follow Speaker Scott’s inspiring example and help support the next generation. Generous contributions from alumni have continually strengthened Hampton University’s ability to provide exceptional educational opportunities.
