In a historic milestone celebrated earlier this year, Hampton University, located on the picturesque coast of Hampton, Virginia, proudly achieved the prestigious Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education’s Research 2 (R2) designation. This accomplishment signifies Hampton’s surge in academic and scholarly strength, fulfilling critical benchmarks, including the awarding of at least 20 research doctorates annually and maintaining over $5 million in annual research expenditures. The achievement underscores the success of Hampton’s ambitious “Elevating Hampton Excellence” strategic initiative, setting the stage for greater national prominence, increased opportunities for students, and enhanced institutional advancement.

With this designation, Hampton University has joined the exclusive ranks of just 139 universities nationwide that meet Carnegie’s rigorous academic standards of high research activity. Within the United States’ Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) community, Hampton stands proudly among an elite group of only thirteen institutions holding this prestigious R2 classification. The University’s achievement symbolizes not only the dedication to scholarly excellence but also the institution’s unwavering commitment to addressing societal challenges through groundbreaking research and innovative scholarship.

University President Darrell K. Williams, himself a Hampton alumnus, recognized the magnitude of this achievement. “This is a transformative, defining moment for Hampton University,” Williams declared. “Attaining Research 2 status signals our dedication to groundbreaking research, providing transformative academic opportunities for students, and our ongoing mission to excel amidst top-tier academic institutions.”

Becoming an R2 institution significantly empowers Hampton’s research enterprise, enhancing eligibility for prestigious grants, attracting distinguished faculty, and creating expanded hands-on research opportunities for students across vital fields including cancer research, climate science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and social sciences. Hampton has strategically invested more than $30 million annually in research, highlighting its commitment to driving innovations that positively impact regional, national, and global communities.

Dr. Neelam Azad, vice president for research, expressed pride in this advancement: “This designation highlights tremendous hard work and scholarly contributions by Hampton’s dedicated students and faculty. Our growing research enterprise positions Hampton at the forefront of groundbreaking scholarship, setting historic benchmarks for future growth and innovation.”

As proud alumni and active supporters of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc. (NHAA), it is a moment to celebrate and reaffirm alumni commitment to Hampton’s future. Alumni and supporters are encouraged to contribute generously to NHAA’s Student Emergency Fund. Donations ensure the University’s students can engage fully in academic exploration and meaningful research experiences, building a future generation of leaders and innovators.
