On January 22, 2025, Hampton University proudly hosted its 132nd Annual Founders Day Celebration, an event that honored the institution’s outstanding past and ambitious future. The keynote address, delivered by General Darrell K. Williams, Hampton University’s first Black four-star general alumnus, became the highlight of this significant occasion. General Williams eloquently linked the University’s storied past with contemporary leadership responsibilities, emphasizing Hampton’s pivotal role in nurturing visionaries who can transform today’s challenges into tomorrow’s opportunities. His message of resilience, ethical leadership, and steadfast commitment resonated deeply with students, alumni, faculty, and community members gathered at the university’s iconic Ogden Hall. This landmark event not only celebrated the university’s heritage but also underscored its evolving spirit of innovation and progress.
Complementing the Founders Day activities was the grand reopening of the newly renovated Hampton University Museum, made possible by a $5 million investment backed by generous alumni donations and significant institutional support. The museum now beckons visitors with cutting-edge, interactive displays and a digitized collection that significantly broadens its educational potential and global accessibility. Among the impressive additions is a dedicated gallery highlighting the influential work of renowned muralist and Hampton alumnus John Biggers, as well as rare historical artifacts from Indigenous communities and the African diaspora. Under the leadership of museum director Dr. Vanessa Thaxton-Ward, these renovations reflect Hampton University’s continued commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage and making history come alive for younger generations nationwide through enhanced virtual tours and interactive educational resources.
The commemoration comes at an exciting time for Hampton University, which recently earned the honor of being ranked seventh among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by U.S. News & World Report. President Darrell K. Williams (no relation to General Williams) passionately articulated the university’s vision during the celebrations, highlighting that Founders Day serves not only to reflect upon the university’s remarkable past but more importantly, to inspire ongoing investment in the students who will lead impactful futures across America and beyond.
As part of this commitment, Hampton launched a special scholarship fund named in honor of General Darrell K. Williams, dedicated to supporting ROTC students pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). They invite alumni, partners, and community supporters to contribute to initiatives enabling these promising students to attain academic excellence and leadership skills critical to national and global progress.
